Banyana Banyana forward and current Africa Women’s Player of the Year, Chrestinah Thembi Kgatlana and her team mate, Linda Matlhalo have joined Chinese Women’s Super League club Beijing BG Phoenix FC barely two weeks after their exit from American National Women’s Soccer League side Houston Dash.
The pair appended their signature to a one-year deal each with Beijing BG Phoenix FC and they are expected to join the team after South Africa’s participation in the 2019 Cyprus Women’s Cup which begins on Sunday.
On Friday, Bayana Bayana confirmed the signing of the players via their Twitter handle: “Congratulations to @Banyana_Banyana forward @KgatlanaJnr11 who has penned a 1-year deal with Beijing BG Phoenix FC that plays in the Chinese Women's Super League. She joins the side after the Cyprus Women's Cup.”
Houston Dash terminated the contracts of Thembi and Linda a fortnight ago on the heels of rumours linking them to China after spending the 2018 season with the American club.
Both Thembi and Linda were part of the South African team that finished second at the 2018 Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations held in Ghana from November 17 to December 1.
However, Thembi was phenomenal winning three Woman of the Match and the Top Scorer awards with five goals and ultimately the Woman of the Tournament accolade.
Meanwhile, Bayana Banyana begin their Cyprus Cup campaign with a match against Finland on Wednesday.
