Nigeria got off to a flying start in their Under-20 Youth World Cup campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of Qatar in their Group D opening at the tournament being staged in Poland.
The Flying Eagles, whose best performance at the Youth World Cup has been a second-place finish, scored two goals each in both halves to hand themselves a moral-boosting winning start.
Goals from Maxwell Effiom (12th), Henry Offia (24th), Tom Dele-Bashiru (68th) and Olasunkanmi Aliyi (74th) ensured that the Nigerians secured all three points.
Despite going down by that heavy goal margin, Qatar tried to fight back with their best chance falling the way of Zulkifilu Rabiu but Nigeria goalkeeper Olawale Oremade was alert to break up a three-on-one move which was quite threatening.
In the other group game, Ukraine beat USA 2-1.
The teams go into Match Day Two on Monday with Qatar facing Ukraine and Nigeria up against USA.
