Jockey Destiny Kotey rode Ginger to win the Division 2A/2B race

Ten-year-old Ginger, ridden by jockey Destiny Kotey, continued her unbeaten run in the Division 2A/2B event at the 2019 New Year Races which was held at the Accra Turf Club at Borteman.

The highly rated horse, which was given 150 metres distance handicap due to its experience, trotted from behind to overtake her competitors, which included favourite Mr K, in a dramatic fashion to record her 8th competitive win at the same venue.
The South African-bred colt, owned by Harold Darko and trained by Bilal Malawi, finished the heated race,  over a distance of 1,600 metres in a time of 2:02 minutes ahead of Mr K (Joseph Lamptey) and Die Hard (Ebenezer A  Adjetey) who finished second and third respectively.
“She is a fantastic horse and always ready to perform. This is about the 10th race she has won here since we brought her from South Africa and I can say that she has no competitor here,” said trainer Bilal Malawi.

Another interesting race which got the spectators talking on the day was the Novices competition won by Kastania which was ridden by Everest A Dery.
In a race which 12 horses lined up to participate in, Kastania, born and bred in Ghana from the Nuru Captain stables, and rider Dery, forced a powerful finish in which Kastania surged from 100 metres out to finish in an average time of 1 minute and 16 seconds.
"This horse is just three-years-old but very fast. Last week we finished third but today we are winners because we went back to do our home work well. When you have a horse which is fit and ready to win a race you can tell so if you are a smart jockey you will come along with that horse," said Jockey Dery in an interview.

Also, in the Division 3B/4A event, Golden Boy (Ebenezer A. Adjetey) finished first in a time of 1:40 seconds followed by Secret Lady (Davis Ahinakwah) and Sly Mongoose (Issaka Gariba).
