The Ghana Police Service male hockey team and the female side of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) emerged champions in the male and female divisions of the annual Atta Mills Invitational Tournament at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra on Saturday July 28 2018.
While the Police team won their first match 4-1 against highly-fancied Exchequers, GRA Ladies defeated Extinguishers on two occasions to be crowned champions. However, their arch rivals, Police Ladies, failed to participate.
In the first match against Extinguishers, GRA Ladies won 2-0, and again overpowered their opponents 3-0 later on to claim the bragging rights for the tournament.
The tournament, which assembled all the top hockey clubs in Accra, also saw Police winning 4-1 in their first match against Exchequers before bowing 1-2 to the male team of GRA on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
In the Masters division, Golden Sticks were crowned champions after winning against NDK Financiers and Multistix. Golden Sticks defeated NDK Financiers 3-0 in their first match, and also snatched victory from Multistix with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Notwithstanding their feat, Police had a match of their lives against GRA Men in their second game. After Police had taken the lead early in the game, GRA Men fought back gallantly and succeeded in cancelling the lead a few minutes later.
GRA Men went ahead to increase the tally, but Police fought back to end the match 2-2. In the penalty shootout, however, GRA won 2-1 but lost their second game 0-2 to Exchequers on penalties after settling for a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The annual Atta Mills Hockey Tournament is in honour of the late President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills who played a key role in the construction of the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, which paved the way for Ghana to host the ninth African Hockey Cup of Nations in 2009.
