Deaf school braces up for BECE
The State School for the Deaf at Ashaiman has decided to camp its candidates for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the school for intensive teaching.

The decision was taken in consultation with parents to help the candidates to excel in the forthcoming exams.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr Michael Castro Mawuli Cudjoe, disclosed this to the Junior Graphic.
“This is not to say we are breaking the directive by the Conference of Heads of Special Schools that all special schools will remain on holidays because of lack of funds. Ours is a strategic move to equip our candidates very well,” he explained.
He commended parents of the candidates for their readiness “to go the extra mile” to ensure the candidates were not unduly affected because of the indefinite postponement of the reopening of all special schools.
He said the school would be presenting 30 candidates for this year’s BECE and was convinced that their performance would even be better than last year’s.
Mr Cudjoe, however, said last year’s performance was outstanding since no candidate scored below the cut off point of the West African Examinations Council.
“All the 17 candidates who sat the examination passed and some of them are currently pursuing their secondary education,” he explained.
Mr Cudjoe said the problem with the placement of qualified candidates into SHSs under the Computerised School Selection Placement System (CSSPS) popped up again because, “some of our candidates were placed in schools that do not have the required facilities for them.”
Under the CSSPS, it is mandatory for all BECE candidates to choose three schools to qualify for placement, so the deaf candidates are forced to select another school in addition to the two special schools in the country. The only two special schools are the Mampong Akwapim School for the Deaf and the St John Integrated Technical School at Navrongo.
He said for example that, some of the candidates were placed at Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region and Anum Presbyterian Senior High School, which did not have the special facilities for such candidates.
