The former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Abdul Nasiru Issahaku, has acquired a 50% stake in division one newbie's Tamale City FC.

Based in the Northern Region, the recently launched club - Tamale City FC - formerly known as Guan United and has other shareholders including former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman, Alhaji M.N.D Jawula Lepowura (owner of 10% shares of the club) and the founder of Engineers and Planners and brother of former President John Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama.

Dr Issahaku becomes the majority shareholder of the club and will be joined on the board by Messrs Jawula, Mahama and Executive Committee member of the Ghana Football Association Jones Abu Alhassan serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the club.

Alhaji Jawula at a ceremony to launch Tamale City FC said the new club will aid in fast-tracking the development of the Tamale metropolis especially if all the residents support the team.

He said: "In all this, resources and unity must work together. So please, let's come together and cut down the hate and the lies. When teams come to play in Tamale let's not do against the teams of Tamale because it doesn't help.

"We need to qualify to be in the Premiership for us to be noticed. For us to make the town exciting and for us to develop the town.

"Why do we spend so much money and effort to put up such an excellent edifice as the Tamale Sports Stadium and we do not have credible teams to come and play in it. We shall only be lucky to say the Black Stars play there but because the clubs themselves have not put luck in the Stadium the Black Stars cannot even win there," Alhaji Jawula said.

Dr Issahaku resigned from the Bank of Ghana on April 1, 2017. It’s unclear what led to his resignation but the Governor is reported to have cited personal reasons for the move.

Dr Issahaku was appointed Governor of the Bank of Ghana by former President, John Mahama in April, 2016 after his predecessor Dr Henry Wampah resigned.

He was the 14th person to have been appointed Governor of the BoG.

Prior to his appointment as Governor, he was the Second Deputy Governor of the BoG.
