The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG), Dr Abdul Nashir Issahaku rolled back the years on Saturday morning, scoring the consolation for the BOG Football Team in a 5-1 loss suffered at the hands of the Tullow Oil Ghana team in a friendly match.

Although the BOG team filled mostly with veterans were unable to keep-up with their much younger opponents at the St Thomas Aquinas Park, Dr Issahaku surprisingly stood-out with his crunchy tackles, smart passing and neat first touch control of the ball.

Donning the number six jersey for the BOG, he started the game in a midfield role where he committed the first foul of the game before he was shifted further-up the pitch in search of a goal after his side gave away two early goals.

Indeed, he came close to scoring when his audacious back-flick went narrowly wide of the post at the end of the first half.

The Governor, who was cheered with the nickname Nash every time he beat an opponent with his skill was substituted with twenty minutes remaining with his side trailing by 5-0 and a man down.

However, his day was not done because a late injury forced BOG coach, Louis Asu, to bring him back-on for the final five minutes of the game.

Nash missed his first opportunity to score when he went on a mazy run through the Tullow defence before firing wide but he made no mistake minutes later when he fired home an unstoppable shot past the Tullow goalie after he was played through.

Dr Issahaku in an interview after the match recounted his exploits as a student athlete, calling for more focus to be placed on Physical Education in the curriculum of schools.

"At the time when we started school, Physical Education was a very important part of the curriculum and I think we need to get back to that," a gasping Dr Issahaku told the Daily Graphic.

"Most of our generation had some sport of a sort that we engaged in. I played table tennis very well as you may know. I was also a soccer player, I played soccer for my school the great Tamale Secondary School and also at my university in the United States.

"I have always tried to keep fit and I urge all Ghanaians to recognize that it is an important part of being a good citizen".
