Festival for children marked at Apeguso

A cultural festival to encourage youngsters to appreciate the value of their indigenous culture has been held at Apeguso in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern.

It was organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Compassion International Ghana, on the theme: “ Christo-Cultural beliefs, a firm foundation for a solid Christian life”.

In all, over 1,000 pupils from 14 Child Development centres (CDCs) in the district participated in the festival.

The communities were Boso, Labolabo, Fintey, Apeguso, Mpakadam, Juapong, Asikuma and Atimpoku.

The rest are South Senchi, Kpong, Gyakiti, Adjenam, Akwamufie and House of Faith.

The pupils participated in various performances, such as poetry recital, drama, traditional dancing among others.

Addressing the gathering, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman, Mr Thomas Ampem, commended the organisers for providing a platform for the pupils to exhibit excellent stagecraft in their performances which, he said, would help build their self-confidence.

He also commended parents for their high patronage of the event, stressing that it was an indication that they cared for their children.

Mr Ampem advised the youth against over-reliance on prayers for miracles, adding that no amount of prayer without action could lead to results.

He asked them to study hard and support their efforts with prayers to enable them to obtain the needed results.

In a welcome address, the partnership facilitator of the NGO, who is in charge of the Asuogyaman cluster, Mr Alex Mensah Adenyo, said culture had been trivialised and reduced to fetishism whereas it was a way of life of a group of people.

He stressed the need to highlight some of the positive cultural practices in the communities to guide parents and teachers to nurture children to become responsible adults in the future.
