He was transferred to a funeral home where workers were preparing to embalm him when he started to move.
When Mr Williams began kicking his feet inside the body bag they quickly rushed him to hospital where he remains.
The manager of the funeral home said: "I've never experienced anything like it."
The coroner told tv channel WAPTV he had checked Mr WIlliams pulse at around 10.30pm and found no heartbeat.
"I asked the coroner what happened, and the only thing he could say is that it's a miracle," Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said.
Mr Williams nephew Eddie Hester had seen his uncle put in the body bag and zipped up.
Hours later he received a phone call from his cousin.
"He said, 'Not yet,' and I said, 'What you mean not yet?' He said, 'Daddy still here,'" Hester explained.
The coroner believes Mr Williams pacemaker may have stopped working and then restarted again.
"I don't know how long he's going to be here, but I know he's back right now. That's all that matters," Hester added.
