GES, Plan Ghana groom young girls

THE Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with Plan Ghana, has organised a five-day girls camp  in Accra to help young girls aspire  for leadership positions in future.

The first ever girls camp, which was on the theme ‘Empowering Girls for Participatory Development’, attracted 200 junior high school students from 20 schools in the Greater Accra and Central Regions.

The girls were also taken  through personal hygiene, reading, health tips, educational songs, life skills and cultural issues.

Addressing the closing ceremony, the Greater Accra Regional Director of GES, Mrs Elizabeth De-Souza, urged the girls to show more commitment to their education and shun vices that may undermine their chances of becoming prominent personalities in the country.

“You are born to influence your world, make good use of your youthful years and discipline yourselves to become respected citizens so that you can contribute your quota to the development of the nation,” she said.

She urged them to be ambassadors in their various communities and schools and also help to shape the mindset of people towards education.

The Director of Education for Ga West in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Daniel Budu Asiedu, called on the management of the camp to extend the programme to the rural communities in the country in order to enhance girl child education.

He said such a programme would help to nurture the girls and inculcate in them the need for hard work, perseverance and determination to make it in life rather than relying on others for sustenance.

Similarly, an organiser of the Girls Camp, Mrs Gertrude Simpi Amuzu, advised the girls not to allow themselves to be influenced by their peers to migrate to the capital city in search of nonexistent greener pastures.

She also cautioned them  to avoid teenage pregnancy and, instead, concentrate on their studies to help consolidate their future.
