Twenty-three persons convicted for unsanitary practices

Twenty-three persons were convicted for committing environmental and sanitation offences in Tema from January to June, Mr Edward Kwabla Shardey, Tema Metropolitan Environmental Health Officer, said.

He told the GNA in an interview that the unit recorded 41 cases but prosecuted 23 persons and five cases are pending.

Mr Shardey said members of a sanitation task force go around early in the morning to arrest people who violate the law by dumping refuse anywhere.

The Director of Waste Management Tema, Mr Jonas Duneebon, said dumping of refuse at unapproved places had been problematic and measures were being put in place to educate the people on sanitation to start next year.

He said some of the measures include a weekly programme on sanitation on key radio stations, holding public forums, community durbars and also making street announcements.

Mr Duneebon said “We should be responsible citizens and do what is right to ensure a clean environment.”
