Rains cause havoc in Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo

Three days of torrential rains have displaced 5,592 people in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District in the Northern Region.

It rained from Thursday, August 29 to Saturday, August 31, 2013, leaving in its trail the destruction of 805 houses and 538 acres of farmlands, while a number of livestock and foodstuffs were also washed away.

Some of the affected communities are Bindi, Najong Number One, Najong Number Two, Bunkpurugu and Yunyoo.

Some of the victims are said to be temporarily housed in schools and churches, while others are putting up with their relatives.

The Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Wuni Sugri, told the Daily Graphic that no casualty was recorded

He said the affected people had run out of food because their foodstuffs were destroyed by the rains.

He called on philanthropists to go to the aid of the victims with relief items.
