New Magistrate Court for Asokore-Mampong

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Nathan Kofi Boakye, has called on metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs), Members of Parliament (MPs), political parties and the traditional authority in the Ashanti Region to desist from pleading for suspects taken into police custody.

He said often when suspects were arrested over wrongdoings and were being processed for court, a line of politicians including appointees, heads of departments and traditional leaders would approach the police to plead for clemency.

He said such action hindered the work of the police and the judiciary.  He said even though justice emanated from the people, it was the judiciary that administered it.

“So, please Nananom, chief executives, MPs, political party people and those of you in high positions in society who know better should allow justice to take its course,” he said.

DCOP Boakye was speaking at the inauguration of a district magistrate court at  Asokore-Mampong in the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander said a cue must be taken from both the Bible and Koran which frowned upon condoning wrongdoing and disapproved with of it.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Yammin, said there could not be peace without justice and as such called on the people in the municipality to join hands with the security services to do away with instant justice and rather seek to promote peace.

The Member of Parliament for Asawasi, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, urged the police to be diligent in prosecuting offenders. He also urged the people to be law abiding.

He appealed to the Asokore Mamponghene, Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah, to further provide land for the construction of a high court for the municipality.

The MCE for Asokore Mampong, Alhaji Nurudeen Hamidan, noted that with the refurbishment of the police station and the establishment of a district magistate’s court, the assembly was on track in its fight against crime in the municipality.

Justice Jacob Nii Boon, who represented the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Woode, said the inauguration of the court was in line with the rationale to bring justice to the doorstep of the people.

He said besides handling criminal and civil cases, the court would also sit and deal with family-related cases.

Asokore Mamponghene, Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah, assured the assembly of more support and promised to provide land for the  high court. He said the traditional council had also conceived the idea for the establishment of a prison in the area.
