The project, which cost £8,000, was funded by two United Kingdom-based medical doctors, Dr Eric Frempong Pepra and Dr Vinay Shah, both of the Morland Road Surgery.

The library was renovated, furnished and stocked with over 3,000 books. The children were also presented with large quantities of clothing and stationery.

The books included textbooks for primary, junior and senior high schools, motivational books, management and other supplementary readers, as well as dictionaries.

The library has also been equipped with two new computers, a printer, tables and chairs.

Motive

Speaking on behalf of her husband (Dr Peprah) at the hand over ceremony in Kumasi, Madam Evelyn Kuma Osei Owusu said the gesture followed a promise made last year when they donated assorted items to the home.

She stated that they had also arranged with some local publishers in the country to supply a quantity of local textbooks to the library soon to supplement the imported stock they had bought.

Madam Kuma urged the students to develop a keen interest in reading, explaining that it played an important role in every level of education and it was the pivot on which the wheels of learning rotated.

She, however, lamented how some parents denied their children access to quality education for no reason, adding that parents who deliberately refused their children access to education should be made to face the laws of the land since it was not only criminal but also morally unacceptable.

Praises

The Manageress of the home, Mrs Mabel Amponsah, was full of praise for the donors for the huge investment made in the education of the children in the home.

She pledged to ensure that the children made good use of the facility to enhance their education in order for them to become economically empowered after their education.

Mrs Amponsah said until the furnishing of the library, the home had some books but they were not adequate for all the children so they had to use them in turns.
