Why we joined #DumsorMustStop

After a number of impediments have been thrown its way, the highly anticipated #DumsorMustStop vigil spear headed by actress Yvonne Nelson to push for an intervention in the current power crisis facing the nation finally took place last Saturday in Accra.

Ms Nelson, joined by colleagues in the creative arts as well as thousands of Ghanaians walked from the University of Ghana, Legon, to the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout to register the toll the energy crisis is having on them.

While some of the celebs who initially seemed to be strong crusaders ‘loudly’ championing the cause such as Sarkodie, Joselyn Dumas, Ama K. Abebrese, Nikki Samonas, Trigmatic, Lydia Forson, Deborah Vanessah, Eddie Watson were missing in action on the day however, a good number of them were there to support.

Notably among those who participated in the vigil were Afia Schwarzenegger, E.L, DKB, Van Vicker, Wonlov, Prince David Osei, Efya, Elikem the Tailor, film maker, Socrate Safo, D-Black, David Oscar, Barima Sidney among others.

In a chat with Showbiz, the Ghanain showbiz personalities shared their reasons for throwing their support behind Ms Nelson to demonstrate in order to push president John Mahama and his adminstration to find a solution to the energy problem which has been going on for the past three years.

• DKB, comedian: I joined because Dumsor has affected a lot of things including my DKBLIVE Comedy Tour which takes place on university campuses. There have been times the show could not come on because of power outages and that is not good for me.

Infact, nothing would have made me miss this vigil because  the energy problem affects everyone in Ghana and I believe this is one way we can register our displeasure. I hear another vigil will be taking place in Kumasi soon and I will not miss it because I also feel the heat.

• Efya, musician: I decided to be part of the vigil because people are being laid off from work because of the dumsor. I believe when such vigils happen frequently, the government will have no choice but to fix the problem.

• Afia Schwarzenegger, TV and radio personality: The energy crisis has been persisting for three years now and it has created loads of problems so i had to be part of it to let the powers that be know that there is the need to solve it.

People are dying in the hospitals and others have been rendered jobless because of this situation. I think it is about time President Mahama fix it because Ghanaians are tired.

• Socrate Safo, Film maker:  There is no way I could have stayed away from this vigil. My family members would not have forgiven me if I had failed to attend.

You see, people are not buying the movies we make because of Dumsor. This is because there is no power to watch them. Why buy something that will not be beneficial to you? i am a movie producer and it is affecting me greatly.

• Elikem the Tailor: I just had to be here to be part of this vigil because Dumsor is taking a very big toll on my tailoring business among other reasons.

Although the government is doing working hard to fix the situation, I am using this platform to urge the President to hasten the measures he has planned to solve the energy problem.
