Darko, Jeff in Accra Tennis Open semis today

Two of the country’s finest professional tennis players, George Darko (not the musician) and the ‘Pride of Winneba,’ Jeff Bagabasey, would be one of the key figures to watch as the 11th Accra Seniors Tennis Open rolls into the semi-finals today at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club.

Darko, winner of the maiden Interplast Masters, would play the winner of  Francis Akpese and Heyman Abban, while Jeff awaits either Joshua Annan or Wisdom Na-Ajaglo in the second semis of the day.

The two main players are favourites to reach the final but they would first have to clear the-last-but-one hurdle to make the dream a reality.

Jeff appeared to have rediscovered his former self after running out of steam against ‘wonder kid,’ Isaac Nortey, during the Interplast Masters.

At least, 120 up-and-coming tennis stars and veterans have been competing in the tournament since last Sunday and it is expected to end tomorrow.

The co-ordinator for the event, Peter Annan, told the Daily Graphic there would be matches in the doubles category, as well as the 40 years and above, 50 years and above and 60 years categories.

The tie-break format competition is sponsored by Japan Motors (Headline sponsors), MTN, All Afra Electricals, UT Bank, Bank of Africa, Voltic, Akai House Clinic, Mi-Swaco, Ecobank, Sikkins and Glico.
