Street-naming team to begin work in Tano South

The Tano South District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has inaugurated a Street-naming and Property Addressing Team (SAT) to begin the national street-naming and property addressing project in the district.

This follows a presidential directive issued in March 2013 stipulating that street-naming and house- numbering should be completed throughout the country within 18 months.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tano South, Mr Bukari Zakari Anaba, who announced this at the third ordinary meeting of the assembly at Bechem, the district capital, therefore, appealed to Nananom, assembly members, opinion leaders, all and sundry in the district to co-operate with the team and lend their support to ensure the success of the exercise.

Mr Anaba stated further that the exercise would not be restricted to Bechem, but would cover the entire district, stressing that all communities in the district would be covered under the exercise, which is of national importance.

He said the team which was headed by the District Town and Country Planning Officer had been tasked to ensure that the exercise was completed within the time frame.

The DCE for Tano South, in his address, expressed concern about the number of unauthorised structures springing up in the various communities in the full glare of Nananom and assembly members.

He, therefore, appealed to traditional authorities who had engaged unauthorised persons to demarcate plots in their communities instead of relying on personnel of the Town and Country Planning Department to desist from such acts to ensure the proper and orderly development of the district.

He noted that the result of this unfortunate trend in the district was that areas earmarked for markets, schools, sanitation and recreational facilities were now being diverted for other purposes, which is creating a lot of problems for the assembly.

About revenue generation in the district, Mr Anaba stated that the assembly was faced with some challenges in its internal revenue generation (IGF), which had serious effect on the performance and service delivery of the assembly.

He, therefore, called on the assembly members to continue to engage and educate people in their respective electoral areas on the need to pay their rates and taxes owed the assembly while the assembly also put in place strategies to increase its revenue base in order to meet the numerous development needs of the district.

Mr Anaba stated further that the assembly had not reneged on its responsibilities towards persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the district, adding that the assembly had so far disbursed a total of GH¢28,429.35 to beneficiaries of the Disability Fund in the district.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano South and a Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in-charge of Livestock, Dr Hanna Louisa Bissiw, who also addressed the meeting, thanked Nananom, the DCE, assembly members and the people of the district for electing her to represent them in Parliament as well as voting for President John Dramani Mahama in the last election.

She pledged to work closely with the assembly, the DCE, assembly members, Nananom and others to move the district forward for the benefit of all.
