NDC Executives condemn protest by youth

Executives of both the Ayawaso North and East constituency branches of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have condemned the demonstration and protests by some youth of Nima, a suburb of Accra.

Last week, some youth of Nima demonstrated against the Member Of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso North, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, and the government for the delay in completing  the Nima-Maamobi storm project.

According to the protesters, the uncompleted project has  become a danger spot  to members of the community, especially the aged and children, who cross from one side of the storm drain to the other.

The Nima-Maamobi storm drain passes through Kawo-Kudi through to Paloma, Asylum Down, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and finally empties into the Odaw River.

Addressing  the  press  on behalf of the two constituencies, the constituency Chairman of the Ayawaso North, Alhaji Teena Larry, stated that the two NDC branches did not support the demonstration.

He said their MP, Dr Ahmed, over the years had made a lot of investments in infrastructure for both the Ayawaso North and East constituencies.

“This project in question dominated Dr Mustapha’s attention so much that he has expended his personal money on it to facilitate its completion,” he said.

Alhaji Larry stated also that the bureaucratic procurement requirements delayed the construction of the storm drain.

He also made it known that the contractor on the project had his contract terminated as a result of poor performance.

However, the second contractor was unable to continue the project due to an increase in the cost of the project from GH¢6 million to GH¢10 million, as well as the lack of money for mobilisation.
