Objective

The objective of the challenge is to develop research skills of senior high school students to promote technological innovation in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

It is being organised by the Energy Commission and the Ghana Education Service (GES) with support from the Bui Power Authority.

Director

The Director of Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Climate Change of the Energy Commission, Mr Kofi Agyarko, said one of the responsibilities of the commission was to promote the efficient use of electricity and renewable energy through public education, training and regulation of entrepreneurs in the sector.

He said in a similar vein, the commission collaborated with the GES on sustainable woodlot for schools in 2014 to promote the establishment of woodlots in schools as a sustainable source of fuel for cooking and heating.

About the Challenge

Mr Agyarko said the challenge was also to instill in students, a passion for solving renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change challenges through innovative research.

He said it would help develop students presentation skills and promote self-confidence and encourage hard work through public recognition and rewards.

Mr Agyarko expressed appreciation to all regional directors of education and officials from the science education unit of the GES for supporting the programme.

Bui

The Director of Bui Power Authority, Mr Wisdom Ahiataku-Togobo, said the Authority was committed to helping to uncover the renewable energy talent hidden in the youth.

“We are confident that the bulk of ideas scaling up renewable energy deployment are hidden in you students and that is why we are supporting the Energy Commission to unearth the God-hidden talents among some of you," he said.

GES

The Director of Science Education Unit of the GES, Mrs Olivia Opare, said the sector was developing talents in young people, including leadership skills, partnership, critical thinking, innovation, communication, collaboration and also promoting government's agenda in promoting digital literacy.

She told the students to take advantage of the opportunity because it would enhance their research skills and also add value to their lives.
