2020 Best Teacher undertakes educational projects

The 2020 Most Outstanding Teacher at the Ghana Teacher Prize Awards Ceremony, Mr Eric Asomani Asante, has embarked on a number of education projects aimed at improving teaching and learning in some schools in the country.

They include the distribution of science and information and communication technology (ICT) textbooks, construction of science and ICT laboratory and donation of laptops and computers.

At the launch of the 2021 Ghana Teacher Prize recently, Mr Asante said he had distributed 3,000 copies of science and ICT textbooks worth GH¢75,000 to over 60 less-endowed schools across the country and that four regions - Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Volta and Western North, benefited from the project.

“For the said books, I received 2,000 copies of science textbooks from a publisher, Mr Ruben Gbedemah, the Chief Executive Officer of Reuben series, and 1,000 copies of computing textbooks from Best Time Publication, of which I am the author and the publisher,” he said.

Moreover, he said his IT Fun Club dubbed “Digital Age IT Fun Club” had brought teachers and students from selected schools together as master trainers on scratch project and HTML coding, which are prime topics in the new computing curriculum.

According to him, the club’s activities covered only three regions due to financial constraints and named the regions as Greater Accra, Eastern and Central.

Mr Asante, a teacher at the Naylor Seventh Day Adventist Junior High School at Tema Community Six in the Greater Accra Region, indicated that between March 22 and 26, 2021, he again donated 50 laptops and 100 core i5 desktop computers to six less-endowed schools across the country through a sponsorship package he sought from Nestle Business Service.

“I have been able to mobilise funds to put up a science and ICT laboratory complex for the Akuse Community in the Birim North District.

Projects

“The project commenced with my personal donation of GH¢10,000 two weeks after my award and the project is now roofed as you can see. The Advent Press funded the total cost of the roofing at GH¢22,141.42,” he said.

He said Ghana Teacher Prize brought hope to every teacher since it was the only scheme that rewarded excellent performance in the teaching profession.

Mr Asante thanked the sponsors of the Ghana Teacher Prize for putting smiles on the faces of teachers and confirmed that “we have received the sponsorship package you made available to us during the 2020 Teacher Prize Award through the National Teaching Council.”
