The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested three persons in connection with the attempted importation of approximately five million tablets of tramadol with an estimated street value of about GH¢100 million.
The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at the Accra International Airport after officials intercepted a shipment believed to contain the illicit pharmaceutical drugs.
NACOC, in a statement, said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect public health and national security.
Preliminary investigations show the consignment was destined for distribution within Ghana and possibly across the sub-region. Investigators suspect the seizure is linked to a wider drug trafficking network, and further investigations are underway to identify other individuals connected to the operation.
The NACOC statement said the recovered tramadol tablets have been secured as evidence, while forensic and documentary examinations continue. NACOC has reaffirmed its commitment to disrupting the activities of drug trafficking syndicates and bringing those responsible to justice.
The Commission urged the public to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities. The three suspects are expected to be arraigned before court after investigations are concluded, in accordance with Ghana's narcotics laws.
The seizure follows a series of recent successes by NACOC, including the destruction of over sixteen metric tons of seized narcotic drugs in June 2025, an operation described as proof of the Commission's active role in the fight against drug trafficking.
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has commended NACOC for its proactiveness in curbing the drug trafficking menace in the country, stating that "every gram destroyed is a life potentially saved."
