Kenya: Passenger dies over Sh10 fare dispute

A passenger died on Sunday night after being thrown out of a moving matatu by a conductor following a Sh10 fare dispute.

Mr Jared Mang’era Ongaga was travelling to Kericho town from his rural home in Manga district.

Passengers travelling in the same vehicle said the deceased differed with the conductor over the fare and upon reaching Nyabioto junction along the Kisii – Kericho highway, he was thrown out of the matatu.

Mr Mang’era sustained serious injuries on his head after hitting the tarmac road and died instantly.

The angry passengers confronted the conductor who later fled for his own safety.

However, the driver was ordered to drive the vehicle to Nyamira Police Station where the incident was recorded.

The story follows a similar incident in Kumasi, Ghana, where a passenger also lost his life disputed the fair a conductor insisted on taking. The victim had insisted he deserved 10 pesewas more in change and had his throat slit by the door of the moving jalopy he hanged to make the demand.
