The convict, Kingsley Ibe, a scrap dealer, together with three accomplices who are on the run, subjected the security man at the station to severe beatings, dumped him into a lubricant changing hole which contained water before attacking the attendants at the shop.

He pleaded guilty to the offence of causing unlawful damage and robbery.

Delivering the sentence, the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, said robbery had increased in the country and so criminals should not be pampered.

Facts

The facts of the case, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Patrick Morkeh, are that at 2 a.m. on April 1, 2014, the security man at the station spotted two young men approaching the station.

He said the security man decided to approach them and ask of their mission, as the station was closed at the time.

Suddenly, he said, one of the robbers pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot the security man.

Together with his accomplices, Mr Morkeh said, the accused subjected the security man to severe beatings, tied him up and pushed him into one of the lubricant changing holes which contained water.

The prosecutor said the rest invaded the station and attacked the rest of the attendants who had heard the shouts of the security man and had gone to his aid.

He said the robbers tied up the attendants and made away with the night’s sales amounting to GH¢700 and two mobile phones.

Mr Morkeh said the Weija Police received a distress call and proceeded to the scene but the suspects, on seeing the police, fled through a swampy place.

“The police, in an attempt to arrest them, combed the whole area and in the process the accused person was found with his attire soaked in muddy water,” he added.

He said a search was conducted on him and two mobile phones were retrieved but he could not give the numbers of the phones.

The prosecutor said the victim was taken to the filling station where the victims identified him as one of the culprits.

He said a pump attendant at the station and victim in the case also identified one of the mobile phones as hers and when it was turned on her image showed up.

He said efforts were being made to arrest the accomplices.
