The team, made of the Ellembelle District Disaster Management Committee, is championed by the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, who urged the people in the flood prone areas in Ellembelle and surroundings to be watchful.

He said from what happened in 2009, when several houses and properties worth millions of cedis and farm produce got destroyed, should not recur in such magnitude again.

“As the authorities sound the warning bells of more rains it is important for us to first ensure that our personal safety and that of our families to guarantee that we did not get stranded and caught up in the middle of flood waters,” he said.

Mr Buah, who is also the Minister of Petroleum, said his call for caution should not be limited to those in his Ellembelle alone.

According to him, neighbouring districts and communities should endeavour and know when to move to the farm and also the movement of members of their households and the communities.

“I must say that the district assembly would ensure that daily information went round to the people and we will also be on the ground to check and educate communities, schoolchildren, market women in the flood prone areas to be alert,” he said.

He said in recent past his area including Nkroful, Nzema Akropon, parts of Esima and deeper part of the district were affected saying “it even went beyond to Bernyin, Nzulezu, Compound and other parts of the Jomoro District which we must guard against.”

“Our move in Ellembelle is to inform the people and caution them to be part of our pro-activeness to prevent any loss of property to flooding and save all,” he said.

The District Chief of Ellembelle, Mr. Daniel Eshun said the team made of National Disaster Management Organisation in the Region had designed communication modules to educate communities.

“We have what I will call sustained information system that will continue until the end of the season. We are aware of the areas and the flash points and we will not wait to be over taken by events,” he said.

He said on daily basis the team tries to reach out to people in the low areas, advise people and provide numbers to call in case of emergencies, adding: “It is a collective effort and we will make sure we avert it in case it comes.”
