Reporters of the Graphic Group have won majority of the honours in the Oil and Gas category, mostly with stories carried in its special agenda-setting business and financial publication, the Graphic Business.

Moses Dotsey Aklorbortu won the 2015 Best Reporter in Oil & Gas at the 20th GJA Awards, adding to the umpteenth basket of honours bestowed on correspondents of the Graphic Business, which is specialised in reporting business, financial and economic activity and impact stories.

In a statement issued in Accra and signed by its Executive Director, Mr Nuertey Adzeman, GOGSPA categorically singled out Mr Aklorbortu, whose stories the association said often demonstrated his understanding of the oil and gas industry which gave many of the members hope that the future was bright.

“We at GOGSPA are aware that the oil and gas industry is a very technical area that requires a wealth of knowledge; not just to report on but report accurately. Many of our deliberations centred on how to whip up the interest of the media to report truthfully about the industry.

Fortunately, since the discovery of oil in 2007, Daily Graphic, Graphic Business and Graphic Online consistently report issues about industry such as the faulty flow meter on the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah, local content and environmental issues.”

The statement continued that the reporter’s investigations of illegal dumping of oil waste in the past saved the country from environmental disaster.

His report on the upstream operations and fishermen, as well as that pushing for local content and local participation in the industry, brought to the attention of Ghanaians, issues beyond the horizon.”

It added: “As we work toward the success of the oil and gas sector to make up for the disappointments in gold, bauxite and other minerals, which have left many in abysmal poverty, we need a vibrant media to support the drive. One of our fears at GOGSPA is the lack of dedicated media persons to report issues of the industry as we move towards the creation of a well-informed society.”

GOGSPA was particularly happy that Mr Aklorbortu did not relent in his quest for knowledge about the industry to protect the interest of the people of the Western Region and the benefit of the country as a whole but he “showed class at the awards.”

The Graphic Business, which is the youngest member of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, has since its inauguration in August 2008 won 15 awards in various categories of awards by the Ghana Journalists Association and the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ), in collaboration with the World Bank.

The awards cut across categories such as Information and Communications Reporting, General News Reporting, Financial News Reporting, Development Journalism, Sports Journalism, Oil and Gas, Rural Reporting, Social Security (Pensions) Reporting and Best Financial Reporting.
