New district to be carved out of Gomoa East — MP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the Gomoa East Constituency, Mr Kojo Asemanyi, has hinted that a new district will be carved out of the Gomoa East District to ensure that development is brought to the doorstep of the people.

According to him, the new districts that would soon be created by the government would see the splitting of the district into two to ensure rapid development in the area.

He stated that considering the estimated population of the district of more than 200,000, according to the 2010 population and housing census, it was prudent and proper that a new district was created out of the existing one to ensure that development was fairly distributed for the benefit of all.

He mentioned that per the district assembly concept, if an area has about 75,000 people, it qualifies to become a district and that creating a new district out of the existing one, which is the biggest district in the Central Region, would ensure progress in the area.

Interview

Mr Asemanyi disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the sixth assembly held at Gomoa Afransi in the Central Region.

The Gomoa East District, with its capital at Afransi, has two constituencies, Gomoa East and Gomoa Central, and it spans  Gomoa Dampase which shares boundary with Bortiano in the Ga South Municipality to Afransi and its surrounding communities.

The district was carved out of the Gomoa West District on February 28, 2008, by a Legislative Instrument (LI) 1883.

He indicated that he, together with the MP for Gomoa Central, Madam Naana Eyiah Quansah, had taken the necessary steps through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and which had been approved by the Cabinet to be one of the new districts to be created, and would be forwarded to Parliament for consideration on its resumption from recess.

Benefit

According to the MP, the creation of the new district would be of immense benefit to the people in the sense that with the current district capital at Afransi, people travelled a long distance to the capital to seek for services.

He added that the cost of travelling for long hours would be a thing of the past as residents would have access to services at the new district to be created.

Call to assembly members

In an address during the meeting, he called on the assembly members to serve their constituents diligently as well as work to better the lot of the people, adding that ‘You must make yourselves available and accessible to the electorates towards addressing their needs’.

He urged them to join hands with the assembly to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy in the district as it was preventing most teenage girls from realising their aspirations in life.

He used the occasion to commend the assembly members for their dedication and commitment to the progress of the district.
