Akufo-Addo declares dawn of new era in ties with V/R

The first in the series of the regional rallies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took place in Aflao last Sunday with the Presidential Candidate of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, announcing the dawn of a new era in the party’s relations with the people of the region.

Addressing a huge gathering of party faithful that has been described as unprecedented in the annals of the party in the region, Nana Akufo-Addo said the start of the regional rallies in the region was an affirmation of a new order.

The realisation of that new era, he said, would see a renewed relationship that would see him standing with the people of the area towards the attainment of the developmental needs of the region.

The rally dubbed “Volta for Change” was on the theme, “The Role of the Voltarian and the Agenda for Jobs”.

The rally started on a spiritual note with charismatic prayers being said and prophetic declarations made for Nana Akufo-Addo to ascend the presidency.

As part of his developmental agenda for the region, he said when given the nod to become president, oil exploration would start from next year with the building of a new harbour at Keta.

Also, he announced that a number of landing sites would be constructed at the various coastal areas that lined the seashores of the region.

“If this new dawn materialises, I will never let you down. I will keep faithfully to you and complete all that I have said,” he said.

He mentioned that it was unfortunate and a sad development that President Mahama who should have been a unifier of the country in the period that the country found itself had resorted to tribal politics in his attempt to win votes, saying, “That is not the kind of Ghana that we want.”

Dr Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the running mate of the NPP, said what he had witnessed was the reason the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had become panicky and was making statements that did not make sense.

Over the past eight years, he said, the NDC has had more money than all the governments of the past put together, yet has failed abysmally at addressing some basic needs of Ghanaians.

“We don’t want a dead goat as a president. We don’t want to vote for a dead goat who cannot think far in the interest of Ghanaians,” he added.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Peter John Amewu, said the agenda of the party in the region was to garner 30 per cent of presidential votes and win three parliamentary seats in what has been christened “Operation 30/3”.

“We believe in the people of the Volta Region. The time has come for us to become change makers and no one should be allowed to be deceived from playing a role in this agenda.”

Mr Mac-Peter Manu
He reminded party faithful that elections were won at the polling stations, for which reason the party had adopted what it called “Eagle Eye” to ensure that the votes of the party were protected at all levels of the voting process.

The plan, he said, was to ensure that the party was not cheated, adding that cheating was often a connivance among polling agents, Electoral Commission (EC) officials and the security agencies.

Mr Manu, therefore, charged party faithful to take snapshots of the pink sheets with their mobile phone cameras as evidence of the results as declared at the polling stations.

Mr Sammy Awuku

The National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Mr Sammy Awuku, said the reaction he had observed from the people of the region with regard to their massive turnout for the rally was an indicator to those who touted the region as their “world bank” that in this year’s elections, that world bank status would be reduced to a microfinance.

For him, it had become clear that the current NDC government was not working in the interest of the people of the region, adding that the time had come for them to be replaced by a more competent administration of the NPP under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo.

A member of the communications team of the NPP, Mr Abu Jinapor, said as a northerner and a Gonja just like President Mahama, he and the people of the north were ashamed of the of the President’s government and for that matter, he ought to be voted out.

A leading member of the NPP, Mr Alan Kyerematen, said the rousing response from the people of the region had shown that Nana Akufo-Addo was already president.

“A vote for Nana Akufo-Addo is a vote for prosperity and progress. The Volta Region is going to change for the best under a government of the NPP,” he said.
