The items included 10 motorbikes, 100 android tablets with solar chargers and a LED television set.

The rest were reserve power banks, digitalised proxy means test tool and a cloud-based data management software.

Donors

The items were donated by the World Bank Group in collaboration with Marie Stopes International and PharmAccess Foundation.

Presenting the items, the Practice Manager of the World Bank, Dr Nicole Klingen, said the donation was in line with the bank’s objective of eliminating poverty and advancing social protection for the extreme poor in society.

The items, she noted, were to be used to promote the registration of the extreme poor with the National Health Insurance Scheme; improve the payment of Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) benefits and enhance data collection for the National Targeting and Ghana Households Registry database.

They are also to assist the ministry to implement the Africa Health Markets for Equity (AHME) project.

AHME

The African Health Markets for Equity (AHME) project was instituted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with the United Kingdom Department for International Development to increase coverage of priority health technologies and interventions amongst the poor.

Dr Klingen explained that the project was expected to add 150,000 households and 900,000 people made up of 70,000 poor people onto the country’s national data registry by June 2016.

Limited enrolment

The sector Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, who received the items, said the donation would go a long way to improve the country’s social protection system.

“The key thing for the ministry is targeting and getting the right people to get on board the various social protection modules. For instance, for LEAP, as of the last evaluation, we are able to reach one out of 10 potential beneficiaries. These items will help us to go into the rural areas and help those who really need these interventions just within the shortest possible time,” she added.
