Schools tasked to make tree planting part of activities

The Ada West District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Adjoteye Lawer Akrofi, has tasked heads of educational institutions not only in his district, but the country at large, to make tree planting on their school compounds or campuses part of schools activities.

That, he believed, would enable the pupils or students to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees in the school environment and at homes.

“When the pupils/students learn about tree planting and its importance, they will carry what they learn to their various homes and tree planting will be their habit.

“What is important now is to ensure that the teachers in the schools inculcate that habit into the pupils/students for them to pick it and it shall be replicated at their homes,” the DCE stressed.

The Ada West DCE gave the admonition when he, together with other officials from the assembly, Forestry Commission and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), joined some basic schools and the Ada Senior High Technical School (ASTECH) at Sege in the district to plant trees as part of the Green Ghana Project launched.

He said schools that had a lot of trees on their compounds enjoyed more natural air and as a result, effective teaching and learning also took place as the atmosphere was cool and serene.

‘’During our days of schooling, when the classrooms became warm, occasionally, we went under the trees and continued with our studies, especially when the lesson has to do with reading, and we enjoyed such lessons very much. Schools that have more trees can occasionally try that and the learners will be very happy,” Mr Akrofi said.

More tree planting

The DCE said the district, in collaboration with the Forestry Commission, had planned to plant 4,000 trees in the district, adding that but for shortage from the Forestry Commission, “we would have planted more than 2,000 now”.

Mr Akrofi lauded ASTECH at Sege for winning the national tree planting last year even before the President launched the Green Ghana Project. He said ASTECH had become the eye of the schools in terms of tree planting and urged the school authorities to ensure they led the schools and be an example to not only the Ada West District, but the nation as a whole.

He also urged all community members who participated in the tree planting in the schools to replicate same in their various communities for the district to look green as the President envisaged.

The Assistant Headmaster in-charge of Domestic at ASTECH, Mr Patrick Adjison, assured the DCE and the assembly that the school would continue to lead educational institutions in the country in tree planting, adding, “we took the lead before the President brought the idea”.

Tree planting education

The Head teacher of Koluedor Roman Catholic Basic Schools (where the district project was launched), Mr Emmanuel Mawuli Adabra said the school started with education on tree planting prior to the national project.

A pupil of Koluedor Basic School, Master Seth Kofi Klokpa, who gave vote of thanks said the President’s initiative of Green Ghana Project, confirmed what their teachers started teaching them prior to the national launch and was hopeful that they would cultivate the habit of tree planting in life.

He, therefore, promised the DCE that in some few years to come, Koluedor schools would be full of trees as was expected.

Other areas where the DCE and his entourage planted trees included, Agbedrafor, Bornokope and Toflokpo.
