The agreement, which will also involve an Israeli cyber security company, will see to the construction of €400,000 facility to train, explore and lead the pace in cybersecurity and ICT solutions in the country and the West African sub-region.

The Vice-Chancellor of the GCTU, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, who made this known at the 30th matriculation of the university in Accra, said the centre would be one of a kind needed to combat cybersecurity threats.

In all, 2,333 students were admitted to pursue various diploma and degree programmes.

Fully-fledge university

Prof. Afoakwa said in GCTU, technology was embedded in all aspects of teaching and learning, which made students’ quest for knowledge more interactive, easy and fun for students.

He said e-mail, course-based websites and computer-based chat rooms were some of the technology-enabled resources that were used by the university.

“GCTU will empower you to continue the search for knowledge through constant learning and innovation,” he said.

He informed the matriculants that the GCTU had been a public university since August 2020 following the passage of the Ghana Communication Technology University Act, 2020 (Act 1022).

The Act, he said, converted the institution into a fully fledged public university by Parliament.

“The GCTU Act was assented to by the President on August 13, 2020,” he said.

Rebranding

The Vice-Chancellor said the institution would this year continue its effort of massive rebranding to position the GCTU brand as the premier ICT university in Ghana and the West African sub-region.

He said the school would embark on a physical, media and digital public relations campaign to introduce the new GCTU brand.

Last year, he said, management of the GCTU managed to complete the inner roads and car parks project using highly resilient and durable materials, as well as the painting of all buildings at the main campus at Tesano and Abeka.

Enhanced students experience

Prof. Afoakwa indicated that starting from this year, the university would promote scholarship through transformative student experiences, problem-based learning and experiential learning approaches through the application of ICT-based cutting-edge technology.

To allow its graduates make positive impact on society, he said the university was embarking on the total development of its students.

“This will be done by enhancing the knowledge, skill, and attitude of students by linking practical industrial attachment and leadership skills to develop their entrepreneurial ability.

“At least 80 per cent of our students will be made to undergo industrial attachment in organisations where their services will be required after graduation,” he said.

He disclosed that management, as part of its international partnerships, had signed partnership agreements with Ghent University in Belgium, Brent University in France, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the USA and Jiangsu University in China for student exchange programmes.
