He said making negative remarks about the teaching profession in public tended to portray a bad image of the profession.

Mr Dzah made the remarks at the 15th matriculation ceremony of the Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong - Akuapem.

The event on the theme, "Attaining excellence in modern teacher education: The role of the pre-service teacher", witnessed the admission of 341 new students, including students with special needs.

Another significant aspect of the new students was that two of them are minors and siblings, Mawuli Dieudonne Tasiame, 16 is offering science and information, communication and technology (ICT) while the other, Michael Blair Tasiame, is offering Mathematics.

Out of the figure, 51 per cent was females with 49 per cent males.

According to the education director, such negative comments often made by the teachers put the profession in a bad light and that was negatively affectingteachers.

Mr Dzah, therefore, asked teachers to desist from such negative utterances.

 Negative words

"Sometimes, teachers use negative words about the very profession they have chosen to earn income and put food on the table and also cater for their families," Mr Dzah told the new students.

God ordination

The teaching profession, Mr Dzah indicated, had been ordained by God as such they should study well and come out with success to be able to handle students that would be placed under their care.

The Principal of the College, Rev. Dr Nicholas Apreh Siaw, said teacher training was all about hard work as such they should not relax but focus on their studies to achieve their ultimate goals.

Good grades

"The college stands for excellence, so you have no option than to study well to graduate with good grades and get all the needed skills of a professional teacher," Mr Siaw stated.

He assured the students that all the resources had been made available to support them during their stay on campus.

 Innovative & adoptive

The Chairperson of the Akuapem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Ebenezer Acheampong Asiedu, who was the guest speaker, asked the new students to be innovative and adaptive, as well as creative, to be able to manage students they would be teaching.

According to him, the new students should be morally upright and be abreast of technology since technology was now the order of the day.

Rev. Asiedu said the new students should inculcate in themselves the presbyterian spirit of humility and discipline since they were in a presbyterian tertiary institution.
