Martyrs of Uganda Prep, St Lwanga JHS hold graduation

The Headmistress of Martyrs of Uganda Preparatory and Saint Lwanga Junior High School (JHS), Sister Mary Concepta Mensah, has assured parents that the school will continue to train children to grow up to be useful citizens in the future.

She said the vision of the school was not just to aid students to pass their examination with flying colours, but also to adequately prepare them morally for them to lead lives that would be pleasing in the sight of the Lord.

Sister Mensah was addressing pupils and parents during the graduation ceremony of the first batch of 95 JHS students, as well as the 40th anniversary celebration of the school at Santasi, a suburb of Kumasi.

According to her, the school’s crest with the symbols of a stool, a book/Bible, a pen and a dove, portrays a sign of authority, knowledge of God and the Holy Spirit which are Catholic doctrines.

Speaking on the theme: “40 years of Holistic Education: Our Service to the Nation and the Way Forward”, Sister Concepta Mensah stressed that the school, in spite of its humble beginnings, had contributed immensely by producing quality personnel serving in various key sectors of the economy.

She said with the current  population of 1,894 pupils  as compared to the 24 when the school began in 1976, there was an indication that  the school’s highly qualified and experienced tutors continued to assist in nurturing pupils and students to become responsible adults.

As part of the anniversary, the school’s magazine dubbed “Martyrs Journal”, aimed at building the knowledge base of children through the writing of letters, articles, and jokes, was also launched.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mrs Mary Owusu Achiaw, charged tutors to mentor schoolchildren in developing their talents in order to be independent as adults.

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Gabriel Anokye, who chaired the programme, urged the graduating students to go into the world as “Martyrs’ ambassadors”, and added that with the solid foundation they had acquired during their period of stay in the school, nothing could distort their fortunes.
