    With 16 days to the crucial general election on December 7, the two main political parties, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), have intensified campaigns on their manifestos that appear similar in many ways but depart in several other means.

    In typical fashion, both parties promise more fiscal discipline without stating how they intend to achieve them except agreeing on appointing less ministers and removing some taxes.

  • Govt hands over reconstructed Nigerian High Commission building

    The government has reconstructed the Nigerian High Commission (NHC) building that was demolished in June 2020 by some individuals under the cover of darkness and handed it over to the commission.

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration handed over the one-storey building apartments off the Independence Avenue in Accra, to the NHC Wednesday.

  • Four Ghanaian soldiers injured in rocket attack in Lebanon

    Four Ghanaian soldiers on peacekeeping duty in Lebanon sustained injuries as a rocket, "fired most likely by non-State actors within Lebanon" – hit their base “UNP 5-42” in the east of the village of Ramyah in Lebanon on Tuesday.

    The UN peacekeeping agency in southern Lebanon said the four peacekeepers were injured when the rocket hit their base, one of three separate incidents in which its troops and bases came under fire on Tuesday [Nov 19].

    The four Ghanaian soldiers were injured, with three requiring hospital treatment, after the rocket struck the base near the border with Israel, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said. The severity of their injuries is unknown.

  • We must vote for competence

    In the Tuesday, November 12 issue of the Daily Graphic, the Chairperson of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy, urged voters to vote for competence rather than other considerations in the upcoming December 7 general election. 

    For her, considerations of money, religion or even ethnicity should not come into play when voting, adding that the duty of voting was to shape governance and hold leaders accountable.

  • Video shows moment truck falls on another truck on Assin Fosu road

    Hundreds of commuters were stranded on the Cape Coast to Kumasi highway for several hours following a truck accident last Sunday.

    It was a heavy-duty truck carrying an ECG power engine, which was traveling towards Kumasi from Cape Coast that fell on a truck and a private car, severely injuring the driver of the truck which was carrying charcoal.

    The road was blocked immediately after the accident and commuters spent between five to six hours before crossing.

    Our Central Regional correspondent, Shirley Asiedu-Addo reported that the accident happened at the Assin Darmang Ngresi section of the Cape Coast-Kumasi road.

  • Asantehene to receive 28 more 19th-century looted gold ornaments from South Africa

    The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to receive 28 gold ornaments and regalia from South Africa, marking another restitution of Asante cultural heritage looted during the 19th century.  

    The artefacts include linguist staff, swords, palace security locks, rings, necklaces, and proverbial gold-weights depicting crocodiles and gold scandals. These items reflect the governance structures and chieftaincy traditions of the Asante Court.  

  • Pensioner in court for impersonating late brother to sell land

    A pensioner has been dragged to the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impersonating his late brother to sell a plot of land.

    According to police prosecutor, Chief Inspector Princess Tetteh Boafo, Roland Ababio allegedly posed as his deceased brother to facilitate the sale, with Kwame Gyane Ababio acting as an intermediary.

    Ababio, together with his alleged accomplice, Kwame, has been charged with conspiracy to defraud and defrauding by false pretence.

    Some customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) using NURI Prepayment Meters have been unable to recharge their meters for the past 48 hours, causing widespread frustration. 

    The issue is linked to an ongoing emergency upgrade of the NURI Prepayment Meter system, announced by ECG on November 18, 2024.

    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday officially opened the newly constructed Flower Pot Interchange in Accra to traffic marking the completion of the infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic flow between key parts of Accra. 

    The Flower Pot Interchange, which began construction in 2017, is to enhance connectivity between the northern and southern areas of the Accra-Tema Motorway, greatly benefiting commuters in areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema.

  • GCNet loses GH¢4bn arbitration claim; Ghana awarded $2.2 million cost

    An international arbitration tribunal in London has ruled decisively in favor of the Government of Ghana in its legal dispute with Ghana Community Network Services Limited (GCNet).

    The tribunal rejected GCNet's claims and awarded Ghana $2,185,983.21 in legal costs, comprising $1,744,050.42 for legal representation and $441,932.79 for expert witness fees.

  • President Akufo-Addo inaugurates 200MW Bridge Power Station 

    President Nana Addo Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday commissioned a 200-megawatt Ghana Bridge Power Plant at Kpone, near Tema, in the Greater Accra Region.

     
    The project constitutes the first phase of a 515MW bridge power plant owned and developed by three parties: Endeavour Energy Limited, a leading US independent power development and generation company focused on West Africa; General Electric (GE) Vernova, a world leader in gas turbine technology, and a Ghanaian partner, Andaris Energy, an independent energy trading company, at an estimated $1.2 billion.

  • Centenary anniversary of the return of Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I from Seychelles launched in Kumasi

    The Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs has launched a a three day activity to celebrate the 100 years of the return of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I from exile in the Seychelles Island. 

    The three-day activity will begin on Friday, November 22, 2024 with a symposium.

  • Nigeria intercepts 50,000 tramadol pills smuggled from Ghana  

    Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 50,000 pills of Tramadol 225mg smuggled from Ghana into their country in a major anti-drug trafficking operation.

    The Daily Post reports that the pills were concealed in the body compartments of a Toyota Hummer bus allegedly belonging to GUO Transport Company. The vehicle, driven by a suspected trans-border trafficker, was intercepted last Saturday, November 16, at Ijanikin along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.  

  • Independent Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah withdraws and endorses NDC's Joana Gyan Cudjoe for Amenfi Central parliamentary election

    The incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Amenfi Central Constituency, Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, who was aggrieved and decided to contest the 2024 Parliamentary election as an independent candidate following his inability to secure the party's nod for another term in office has withdrawn from the race.

    He has subsequently thrown his support for Joana Gyan Cudjoe, who is contesting the 2024 Amenfi Central parliamentary election on the ticket of the NDC.

    The Supreme Court will on December 18 this year determine the two suits challenging the constitutionality of the Human and Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-gay bill. 

    A seven-member panel of the apex court which had Justice Avril Lovelace Johnson as President, on Tuesday fixed the date after granting leave to lawyers for plaintiff, Richard Sky, to amend their statement of case within two days.
