Kotoko renew hunt for Shafiu

Kumasi Asante Kotoko have renewed their hunt for former Ashantigold striker, Shafiu Mumuni, in a bid to make a meaningful impact in the CAF Champions League, according to a report close to the player.
Reports indicate that Mumuni, the most prolific striker in the country currently, is being chased by Kotoko’s Head Coach, Maxwell Konadu, to beef up his squad for the next African campaign of the Porcupine Warriors.
Konadu, who badly needs a goal poacher to complete his team, has since approached the former Ashgold talisman on the possibility of joining the Porcupine family.
Mumuni, a former striker of Ashgold, decided not to renew his contract when it expired on July 1, having achieved everything on the local scene with the Miners in his seven-year stint with the club.
In an exclusive interview with Graphic Sports, Mumuni, who took the 2019 ESPN WAFU Cup by storm in Senegal last October, confirmed that Coach Konadu had asked for his services as he wanted him to be a key part of Kotoko’s CAF Champions League assault.
“For now, I am a free player. Kotoko Coach, Maxwell Konadu, called me and discussed with me about the possibility of playing for Kotoko and helping him in their CAF Champions League campaign, so I asked him to contact my manager since he decides my future.
“The team I will play next is in the hands of my manager and I am ready to accept any decision from my manager because he knows what is good for me. He has nurtured me from scratch to where I am now,” he revealed.
“I will only play for Kotoko if the two come into agreement and if the contract is going to help me as a player. Joining Kotoko for the CAF Champions League will be an opportunity to market myself for the whole world to see my capabilities,” he explained.
Twenty-five-year-old Shafiu was crowned top scorer as the skipper of Coach Maxwell Konadu’s Black Stars B team at the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations after netting four goals in the tournament held in Senegal last year.
He also made history by becoming the first-ever player to register a hat-trick against Cote d’Ivoire in the semi-finals.
The Porcupine Warriors are preparing to represent Ghana in the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League. They got the nod from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council following the cancellation of the 2019/20 season on June 30 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
