136 File to contest 29 seats in Brong Ahafo

A total of 136 people had filed their nominations to contest the 29 seats in the Brong Ahafo Region in the forthcoming parliamentary election  as of at the end of the two-day exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission to receive nomination forms from people who had collected them.

They are made up of 124 males and 12 females and  none of the seats is being contested by a single candidate.

Political Parties

Statistics provided by the Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the EC, Mr George Gyabaah, indicated that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed for all the 29 constituencies while the Convention People’s Party (CPP) filed for 24 out of the 29 constituencies.

They were followed by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) which filed for 22 constituencies and the People’s National Convention which put up candidates for 12 constituencies and the National Democratic Party (NDP) with nine candidates.

The rest of the political parties; the All People’s Congress (APC), the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), the Independent People’s Party (IPP), the Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP) and the United People’s Party (UPP) each filed to contest one seat in the region.

Independent candidates

In all, six people filed to contest six seats in the region.

Two independent candidates are contesting in the Sunyani East Constituency while one each is contesting in the Dormaa East, Kintampo North, Kintampo South and the Atebubu/Amantin constituencies.

Number of candidates in constituencies

The Sunyani East Constituency emerged as the one with the highest number of eight candidates followed by Techiman North, Pru East, Jaman South and Kintampo North with six candidates each then Asunafo South, Sunyani West, Dormaa Central, Dormaa East, Berekum East, Tain, Techiman South, Nkoranza North, Nkoranza South, Atebubu/Amantin and Sene West with five contestants.

Others are Asunafo North, Asutifi South, Asutifi North, Tano South, Tano North, Jaman North, Banda, Kintampo South, Pru West and Sene East with four candidates each and Berekum West with three candidates.

The Dormaa West Constituency is the only one with two candidates, the (NPP and NDC), filing their nominations for the contest.
