He said civic education was a shared responsibility which must be performed by all citizens irrespective of race, gender and ethnic background.

Mr Latsu said when citizens knew their rights and responsibilities, they would fully participate in the governance process of the nation and contribute meaningfully towards its development.

Mr Latsu said this during the inauguration of the Abrewankor Junior High School (JHS) Civic Education Club (CEC) at Abrewankor in the Nkwanta South District of the Volta Region.

He said all had a duty to perform and a task to discharge if the country was to develop stressing that it was a challenge all must be prepared to meet with all the seriousness it deserved.

Mr Latsu said this could only be achieved if personal interests were relegated to  the  background and prosecute an agenda  and vision that would propel society to the top and to become the most developed country in the sub-region.

The headmaster of the Abrewankor JHS, Mr Desmond Adunai,  commended the management and staff of the NCCE for their commitment to duty which had resulted in the inauguration of the CEC in the school, and urged the pupils to take advantage of the opportunities available to them to study hard.

An assistant civic education officer of the NCCE, Mr Abass Yussif,  appealed to Ghanaians to help protect and maintain state property so as to prolong their lifespan.

He said Ghanaians, especially those at the helm of affairs, should consider those properties as theirs and protect them so that future generations could come and use them.

He also called on the citizenry to actively participate in communal labour in their communities as a form of contribution to national development.

The 30 -member club has Master James Asesu as Chairman, Robert Anetan as Secretary, Godwin Ntenya as Treasurer, Alberta Menase as Organiser and Mr Peter Nyinfor as Patron.

They were later presented with some copies of the 1992 Constitution and the Ghana Constitution game. The inauguration of the Abrewankor JHS CEC brings to 24-the number of such clubs in the district.

The idea for the formation of CECs was mooted in a final communiqué issued in March, 1996 at the National Consultative Conference on Civic Education which was organised by the NCCE.

The formal launching of CECs throughout the country took place at the Accra Academy in March, 1996. Five schools, namely:  Accra Academy, Achimota School, Accra High, Ebenezer Secondary School and PRESEC, Legon were present at the inauguration.

Civic Education Club (CEC) is a voluntary study group of the constitution which provides an avenue to shape the views of the youth on the constitution and will help develop in its members an awareness of the principles and objectives of the constitution as the fundamental law of the land.
