“We are totally disappointed about the poor pace of development in the Agotime-Ziofe District,” and we lay the blame squarely on the shoulders of the DCE for which we want him removed as DCE,” a high powered delegation from the traditional area told former President JJ Rawlings at his office in Accra on Wednesday.

The delegation of chiefs had gone to the former President’s office to elicit his personal support to carry out their sentiments and frustrations to the government for action.

The delegation was made up of Nene Akoto Sah VII, Awafiaga of Agotime, Nene Agbovi V, Dusifiaga of Agotime,  Nene Tuafo Tachie III, Manye Sebezo IV, of Kpetoe, Fiator Hiatsi and Tsami Ampomah.

According to the leader of the delegation, Nene Akoto, they had already sent a petition to the government and were waiting for a response.

Sharing aspects of their petition, Nene Akoto told former President Rawlings that the youth in the area had taken them (chiefs) on for not advising the DCE considering their frustrations.

He said the traditional area lacked potable water, good drainage system as well as roads.

“One could hardly ever boast of any achievement for the traditional area and the social life of the people remained stagnant,” he told the former President.

Nene Akoto also said nepotism glaringly showed in the distribution of social amenities while discipline had broken down completely.

“Land had not been acquired for the assembly; not even the lands located for the assembly complex and residential areas were plotted or documented,” he charged.

All appeals from the community to open a district court, according to Nene Akoto VII, had also fallen on deaf ears.

People’s concern

Nene Akoto mentioned lack of initiative to start or continue any meaningful development project in the area, nepotism, autocracy and stiffness on vital suggestions from the people and discrepancy in the distribution of development priorities as some of the reasons why they do not want the DCE.

He said since the consequential effects of these speculations discredited the ruling government, the chiefs and people had decided to change the DCE as a matter of urgency.

“We are changing him in the interest of peace and development,” Nene Akoto declared, “at the corridors of nepotism, we would prefer an efficient, effective and selfless person to be the DCE to pave way for democracy, peace and the development of our cherished district.”

He said the petitioners, for their unflinching support for the NDC government, wished to fall “on your Excellency President Rawlings to come to our rescue to change the DCE as well as to have a deep feeling of all the ideals of the Better Ghana Agenda”.

Former President Rawlings

Former President Rawlings, who received the delegation, expressed his gratitude for their show of courtesy and commended them for using due process to address their grievances.

He promised to pass on their concerns to the appropriate authorities for quick resolution.

At the meeting were the personal aide to President Rawlings, Mr Kofi Adams, and  his media relations officer, Mr Kobby Andoh.
