Beneficiaries of the $75-million Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project are the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo, Central and Western regions.

The project, which is a collaboration between the World Bank and the Government of Ghana, starts this year and is expected to be completed in 2015.

In the Northern Region, 14 districts are to be covered under the project, which will include capacity building and the rehabilitation of 13 small town water systems, 400 boreholes and the construction of four new systems.

Seventy households will also be provided with latrines under a community-led total sanitation programme to ensure an open-defecation-free community.

The World Bank Task Team Leader, Mr Emmanuel Nkrumah, who is also the supervisor of the project, announced this when he paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Mr Bede Ziedeng, in Tamale Thursday.

He mentioned the beneficiary districts in the region as Walewale, Gambaga, Bimbilla, Daboya and Saboba.

The others are Wulensi, Nalerigu, Salaga and Zabzugu.

The rest are Gushegu, Chereponi, Bole and Tinga.

Mr Nkrumah called for effective collaboration among all the implementing agencies, including district assemblies in the beneficiary areas to ensure that the people  benefited fully from the intervention.

Mr Ziedeng expressed appreciation to the benefactor for what he described as its immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the area over the years.

“We welcome and appreciate all the support and previous interventions by our patrons but would like to acknowledge that for a long time, we have suffered such deficiencies in water distribution since the colonial period,” he stated.

Mr Ziedeng indicated the preparedness of the regional co-ordinating council to co-operate with any organisation or establishment to accelerate the development of the region in order to ameliorate the plight of the people.
