AMA signs ‘Chale Wote’ agreement - To promote culture, tourism in Accra
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Accra DOT ALT, organisers of a popular street carnival in Accra, the ‘Chale Wote’ Art Festival, for the successful hosting of this year’s event in the capital.

The Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, signed on behalf of the assembly, while the Director of Accra DOT ALT, Mantse Aryeequaye, initialled for his organisation at a ceremony in Accra yesterday.
Festival
The Chale Wote Street Art Festival is an annual festival that showcases arts and music and also enhances collaboration between Ghana-based artists and their international counterparts.
Activities at the festival include photography, films, fashion, live music, dance, tours, food bazaars and the display of talents on the streets.
This year’s event is scheduled to take place from August 14 to 20, 2017.
Significance
Mr Sowah explained that the festival formed part of the assembly’s effort to promote the cultural heritage of the country, adding that the Ga Mashie enclave, where the festival would be held, was a unique area because of its historic importance for which reason the assembly was collaborating with the event organisers.
He added that the assembly had, over the years, partnered various stakeholders in the arts and cultural industry and said the festival was a tool which the assembly could use to realise its objective of putting Accra on the international tourism calender.
Mr Sowah also noted that the festival could boost the economic situation of the people in the metropolis as it promoted local tourism.
Homowo
On this year’s Homowo Festival, he said security measures had been put in place to ensure a peaceful and successful celebrations.
For his part, Mantse Aryeequaye expressed gratitude to the assembly for supporting the organisation of the carnival for the past six years.
According to him, participation in the event has increased over the years, with more than 30,000 people attending last year’s festival.
