Wesley Girls’ High School receives books to boost performance in English language and Literature
Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast, has been presented with copies of the recently launched book, Understanding English Literature.
Presenting the books valued at GHc6,000, the author, Mrs Mercy Catherine Adjabeng, who is herself a former English Language and Literature tutor of the school, said she was pleased to be supporting the school to continue its academic excellence.

”I've been part of the school because I taught here for several years and it's a great joy to be supporting the school to maintain its academic excellence through the use of these books".
Mrs Adjabeng described the book as a timely intervention, adding she was confident the book would boost the academic performance of students in English language and Literature courses because ”it breaks down the basic concepts and techniques of Literature that make students think the subject is difficult."
She also noted that teachers could use the book to enhance their work.
"Teachers of Literature can also use the book as a facilitator's handbook to provide further information for their teaching. This is because the book ultimately aims at providing a complete guide for general reading, studying, and a straightforward approach to understanding and enjoying Literature.
In the 2018 WASSCE, a total of 193,882 candidates representing 61.67% failed to obtain the pass mark for English Language to enable them gain admission into the University.
Out of this number, 68,002 representing 21.6% optained F9 or failed in English Language. This threatens the academic capital and sustainable development of this country.
The Senior Housemistress of the school, Mrs Joyce Opare, who received the donation on behalf of the Headmistress, Mrs Kay Oppong-Ankomah, assured the author that the school will make her proud.

She also commended the Vice Chairman of the Wesley Girls' PTA, Dr. Eric Oduro-Osae and some parents of the school, who supported the donation.
She was also grateful to the Headmistress, staff and students for their warm reception.
The author also urged parents and past students of various schools to support other schools to buy copies for their libraries and book shops.
