Accra High School wants boarding facilities

The Headmaster of Accra High School, Mr Emmanuel Kobina Baidoo, has appealed to the government and other stakeholders in education to put up a boarding facility for the school.

He said that would improve teacher-student contact hours and the overall output of students, and lessen the increased burden on infrastructure in the school.

Mr Baidoo said this at the 96th Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the school in Accra last Saturday.

Mr Baidoo said the increase in the number of students from 1,400 to 2,600 had meant that students stayed on campus for effective academic work.

“We believe when our students stay and study on our campus under the supervision of our teachers, their academic performance will greatly improve,” he said.

Achievements

On achievements, Mr Baidoo said the school performed very well in the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), resulting in a promotion from a category ‘B’ to a category ‘A’ school.

He stated that the quality passes in Mathematics shot up from 17 per cent to 51 per cent.

Concerning extra curricula activities, Mr Baidoo said the school won a gold medal at the 2018/19 Zonal Sports and Athletics Competition.

Out of over 620 participating schools in the Olympiad Quiz Competition, he said, the school won silver and bronze medals.

Stakeholders

Speaking on “Developing SHS Graduates for Nation Building: The Role of Stakeholders”, the Dean of Students of the Faculty of Applied Arts, Accra Technical University, Mrs Vivian Biney Aidoo, said to ensure that SHS graduates were fully developed for nation building, there was the need for stakeholders, including the government, teachers, parents, heads of schools and alumni, to focus on delivering quality and relevant education while taking advantage of new technologies, especially the internet and social media.

“New technological initiatives such as projectors, smart boards and relevant online study sites can be introduced into the curriculum to enhance delivery in the classroom,” she said.

She advised students to study hard and strive to attain good results in their WASSCE so that getting into the tertiary institutions would not be difficult.

“Don’t give up on your dreams. Some few years ago I was right here just like you and now this is where I stand speaking to you as a guest speaker,” she added.

Awards

Students whose performance in the 2019 WASSCE brought honour to the school were rewarded.

Continuing students and non-teaching staff of the school whose performances and contributions projected the image of the school were also given awards.

Special prizes were also presented to the best improved department, retired and transferred staff members.

A Form Three General Arts student, Ethel Addobea Aryeh, was adjudged the Best Behaved Student, while Joseph Michael Commey emerged the Best WASSCE student.

The event also saw a beautiful display of drumming and dancing by the schools cultural group (Ahisco Cultural Troupe) and a performance by the school choir.

The event was organised by the 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2009 year groups of the school.
