Goldkey refurbishes Yilo State School

A Ghanaian real estate development company, Goldkey Properties Limited, has refurbished the dilapidated Yilo State Municipal Authority Basic School in Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.

The school, popularly known as Dada School and located at Salosi, a suburb of Somanya, was established in 1938 and named after its first head teacher, Mr E. T. Dada.

The infrastructure in the school had, over the years, suffered in terms of maintenance and repairs, leading to its dilapidation state, a situation that attracted the attention of and subsequent support from Goldkey Properties through the Suapo Manye of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, Manye Awo Dede Kosi Otinor, a development queen mother, who intervened and, together with the company, refurbished the school and provided a urinal and five dustbins.

At the handover ceremony in Somanya last Friday, the Director of Goldkey Properties, Mr Alexander Dordor, said the company believed in giving back to communities, and that, over the years, it had championed initiatives to improve lives with its resources through its corporate social responsibility programme.

That, he said, was exemplified in notable initiatives in the areas of health, education, environment and sanitation.

Anniversary

He said as part of its 25th anniversary, Goldkey Properties, which is a member of the CH Group of Companies that is made up of notable firms, including Chase Petroleum Ghana Limited, Chase Logistics, Tema Tank Farm Limited, Pinora Limited and Danton Property Managers Limited, took on the responsibility of refurbishing and painting the three -unit junior high school (JHS) classroom block, as well as painting of the primary block, the office and store of the school.

Scholarships to teachers

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Eric Tetteh, said development was a shared responsibility, as the assembly alone could not do everything, and lauded the benefactors for their benevolence.

He said education was key on the agenda of his administration and, therefore, the assembly was ready to partner any development agency that would bring development to the municipality.

The MCE said in line with the policies of the assembly, between now and 2024, it would award scholarship to deserving teachers who worked hard to further their education, provided they would return to the municipality after their courses.

“I want to urge all the teachers in the Yilo State School to take advantage of the new outlook of the school to put in their best to produce better results than it used to produce,” the MCE added.

Condition

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Director of Education, Ms Veronica Akoshia Tetteh, said the condition of the school before it was refurbished had been a disincentive to both learners and teachers, adding that with the refurbishment, both teachers and learners had no excuse not to put in their best.

The Head Teacher of the Yilo State Basic School, Mr Edward Ofosu, was grateful to Manye Awo Dede Otinor and Goldkey Properties for the intervention.

Manye Awo Dede Otinor also expressed gratitude to Goldkey Properties for responding to her appeal for support for the refurbishment of the school.
