Develop entrepreneurial mentality - Chancellor charges graduates

The West End University College (WEUC) in Accra has held its 10th congregation ceremony with a call on university graduates to possess an entrepreneurial mentality so as to enable them to set up their own businesses rather than rely on government.

The Chancellor and Founder of the WEUC, Mr Joe Mensah Agyekum, who made the call, noted that there was the need for graduates to do something for themselves with the acquisition of knowledge they had acquired in view of the opportunities that were existing.

At the ceremony held last Saturday, which was alongside the seventh matriculation, 185 students who pursued various courses in Education, Information and Communications Technology, Business Administration and Nursing graduated.

They were made up of 54 males and 131 females.

Admission

An additional 298 freshmen and women were formally admitted into the university, which is affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The fresh students comprised 106 males and 183 females.

Mr Agyekum noted that having an entrepreneurial mentality for today’s graduates was non-negotiable as they moved out into the world following their studies.

Mr Agyekum, who was presented with a citation for steering the affairs of the college for 10 years, said although they had been taught entrepreneurship, they should endeavour to put what they were taught into practice rather than rely on the government for employment.

He said the graduates should not give up on their dreams and that they should take up the challenge by taking their destinies into their own hands by going out there with all the confidence they have in setting up their own businesses.

Studies

“Our aim is to add entrepreneurship to your studies so that you can rely on yourself instead of relying on government for jobs,” he said and congratulated the graduates on adding value to themselves.

Mr Agyekum also charged the fresh students to take their studies seriously by being focused on their objectives and dreams in life.

The Head of Department of Classics and Philosophy, Prof. Samuel Awuah-Nyamekye, congratulated the management and staff of the WEUC on the feat the institution had achieved.

Speaking on the topic: “A Decade of Private Tertiary Education in Ghana –West End University Experience,” he said private universities had grown considerably over the years in the country, contributing significantly to the socio-economic and educational growth as well as its development.

“The private tertiary institutions have been innovative and this has led to the introduction of market-driven programmes that enable their students to fit well in the job market.

That is why I am fascinated by your motto of bridging industry and academia,” he said, adding that “in order to meet the growing demands for higher education, you have created flexible arrangements and sessions to meet the needs of the various segments of students including workers who have the desire to pursue tertiary education”.
