St Daniel Comboni Technical Principal removed• Interim Board dissolved

The management of the Ghana Education Service has removed the acting Principal of the St Daniel Comboni Technical /Vocational Institution at Liati in the Volta Region, Mr Lawrence Mottey, with immediate effect.

Mr Mottey is said to have run the institution without recourse to lay down rules and regulations to the extent of going to the market himself to procure items.

Gross disrespect

A source at the GES headquarters said Mr Mottey refused to take instructions from the Regional and District directors of Education and also refused to respond to invitation by the regional director.

According to the source, Mr Mottey was said to have defied all instructions from the Regional Director of Education and allegedly mismanaged the institute “to the verge of collapse.”

It said the Ag Principal showed “gross disrespect and indiscipline” towards the regional director and by extension towards the management of education.

The source said when Mr Mottey was asked to hand over to the District Director of Education, he resisted but finally handed over without signing most of the handed over documents.

It stated that “in the first place, Mr Mottey is an Assistant Director One, a level, per the GES appointment, that does not qualify him as a principal,” but could only act as a principal.

Circular to Mottey

A circular signed by the Director-General of the GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwa, addressed to Mr Mottey and sighted by the Daily Graphic read: “You are to report to the headquarters for reposting instructions.”

The circular, which was addressed to Mr Mottey through the Volta Regional Director of Education, has been copied to 12 individuals, including the Minister of Education and his deputies, the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, the Ag Chief Director of the ministry, the Chairman of the GES Council and the General Manager of the Catholic Education unit.

It, therefore, asked the regional director to assume temporary responsibility for the management of the school.

Dissolution of Board

In a related development, another circular signed by Professor Amankwa and addressed to the Volta Regional Director of Education stated that the GES has dissolved the Interim Board of the institute forthwith.

“The Management of the Ghana Education Service has directed that in the interest of the service, the Interim Board of director of the St Daniel Comboni Technical/Vocational Institute at Liati in the Volta Region is dissolved forthwith.

The Ag Principal, Mr Lawrence Mottey, is removed from office with immediate effect,” the circular said.

The circular directed the regional director to “take appropriate steps to ensure smooth running of the institute pending the appointment of a substantive principal for the institute.

“You should, in consultation with the appropriate stakeholders, take immediate steps to constitute a Board of Governors for the institute,” the circular concluded.
