Wisconsin University College aids orphan to further education

The Wisconsin University College in Accra has stimulated the dream of a senior high school (SHS) graduate, Ms Victoria Appiasah, an orphan, of becoming an economist and a lecturer, by presenting her with a full scholarship package to pursue an undergraduate programme at the university.

The university college has offered her admission to pursue Economics in its Economics Department.

Package

The offer follows a Daily Graphic publication of Ms Appiasah’s appeal for support to enable her to pursue tertiary education.

The scholarship package covers tuition, hostel and feeding fees among others, as well as a monthly stipend.

The university will also give Ms Appiasah transportation allowance to enable her visit her hometown, Asesewa, in the Eastern Region and back at the end of every semester.

Opportunity to excel

In his remarks after the presentation of the scholarship to Ms Appiasah at the university college in Accra yesterday, the Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Obeng Mireku, urged Ms Appiasah to see the offer as a golden opportunity to bridge the gap of poverty.

While assuring her that the university had cherished values, he also cautioned her to be mindful of distractions in tertiary institutions, as she would generally be on her own.

The VC reminded her that God had a way of lifting people from nowhere to stardom and inferred that her story would be one of success that would be told one day.

Prof. Mireku, therefore, advised her to take advantage of the serene and conducive educational setting of the university to study hard, urging her to feel free to approach any lecturer or staff in the event she ran into any difficulties.

Be focused

The Operating Officer of the university Mr Jacob Fynn, congratulated Ms Appiasah on her sterling performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

“With your performance, we will have no problem offering you admission,” he said, adding that even though the university would not restrict her from taking up a job anywhere, it would be interested in retaining her.

Mr Fynn advised her to remain focused and feel free to access the numerous facilities in the university that enhanced learning, “but also make time to have social life because this is the best place to be.”

Response, gratitude

Responding to the offer, the visibly elated Ms Appiasah, who was accompanied by her godfather, Mr Fred Owusu, thanked the university for offering her the opportunity to realise her dream of furthering her education beyond SHS.

She also thanked the Graphic Communications Group Ltd for ensuring that her predicament was made public by publishing it in the Daily Graphic, which attracted the attention of the university.

Ms Appiasah pledged to study hard to justify the huge investment the university would make in her, as well as abide by all the rules and regulations of the institution.
