2 Bodies launch project to promote STEM education

ASUSTEM Robotics Academy, a non-profit organisation that seeks to inspire children, the youth and working individuals on a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects through projects in robotics, engineering, computer coding and tech modules, has launched a new project dubbed: ‘TransforME Project’ to promote STEM education.

The TransforME project, which is being held, in partnership with Lenovo, a leading computer company and Asustem Robotics, is aimed at equipping the youth and working individuals with STEM education while inculcating arts as well, through technology, as an effective learning tool in the 21st century.

Focus of the project

The project, which is being held on the theme: “Developing the youth and working individuals in Ghana with 21st Century Job Skills’, is being embarked upon in a road show across the 16 regions of the country and is targeting about 1,500 beneficiaries including children, the youth and working individuals.

Programme modules will include Robotics, Machine Learning, Arduino, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Python Programming, Electronics and Website Development.

Asumadu-Boateng, said “Asustem is committed to actively training children, the youth and working individuals to meet trending and innovative technologies and for this reason our tagline; ‘Inspiring Young Minds and Developing Creative Thinkers for the 21st Century Job Skills”’.

The TransforME project, she explained, sought to inspire young minds and develop creative thinkers who would be innovative and embrace new trends of technology.

She expressed the hope that at the end of the entire roadshow, participants would be more informed and passionate to develop their skills along technology and even start their own businesses.

Mrs Asumadu-Boateng, on behalf of her outfit, thanked the international partners, Lenovo and Motorola, for their support and the local partners; the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) – Koforidua, Ghana Education Service, PeopleSence, Genius IT Foundation and PWEB Consulting Group, for coming on board to support a good cause.

For his part, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Asustem Robotics, David Asumadu-Boateng, said “our mission is to develop and prepare the young ones of Africa by providing them with practical STEM empowerment programmes that will enable them to be developers, creative thinkers, and innovators for the African continent.

“We are currently seeking for corporate partners who will be willing to partner us on this TransforME project as we prepare our project beneficiaries for various sectors in Ghana,” he said.

The Eastern Regional Librarian, Mr Evans Korletey-Tene, who represented the GhLA, said the authority had a vision of connecting Ghanaians to knowledge resources, which was being achieved through the introduction of innovative programmes, as such partnerships with stakeholders like Asustem Robotics Academy was in the right direction.

He said the Eastern Regional Library was a beneficiary of the Youth Engagement Centre project, which aimed at providing the convenient space for the youth in Koforidua with the focus of providing peer to peer learning, career mentorship and job matching support as well as digital entrepreneurial skills.
