Gold Coast Refinery opens up to players in gold value chain

Gold Coast Refinery has invited stakeholders in the gold mining value chain in Ghana and West Africa to take advantage of the company's facilities to increase revenues through value addition.

The Executive Director of the refinery, Mr Emad Deraz, said the company possessed the capacity to process more than double of gold mined in Ghana and asked other countries to look at Ghana in their gold refinery activities.

"I want to use this opportunity to invite all the people in the gold sector who want to do business in Ghana to come to Gold Coast Refinery to see for themselves that Ghana has a state-of-the-art gold refinery with the needed expertise, coupled with modern technology to refine gold and silver to the highest purity per international standards," Mr Deraz said as he led a delegation from the company to receive a special honour at the maiden Ghana Gold Expo 2020 in Takoradi last Sunday.

Promoting mercury-free mining

The Accra-based Gold Coast Refinery is Africa's second largest gold refinery, and together with its founder and Chairman, Dr Said Deraz, the facility was conferred with the "Ambassadorial position to help promote zero Mercury in gold production and safety environment in Ghana and across Africa" at the event.

Gold Coast Refinery, having received the required certification from the Ghana Standards Authority, has emerged as a strategic investment with the capacity to add value to Ghana's gold to rake in higher revenues from the sector.

Employment opportunities

The refinery also serves as a major employment avenue that could absorb a good chunk of the youth now being wooed from the illegal mining pits across the country, and holds the capacity to serve all of West Africa and beyond. Its entry into the mining space has coincided with the effort to improve Ghana’s earnings in the gold industry.
