Vodafone HR Director launches the HR Focus Conference 2022

10th edition of HR Focus conference launched in Accra

This year's Human Resource (HR) Focus Conference which marks the 10th edition has been launched in Accra.

The launch which was held during the Old Mutual HR Interactive event on Friday, August 26, 2022, was on the theme: “HR’s Role in Business Stability during Economic Crisis”.

Launching the conference, the HR Director of Vodafone Ghana, Hannah Ashiokai Akrong said the event provides a much-needed platform for business leaders, resource persons, and students to discuss and find solutions to key issues in the world of work.

On how HR’s can sustain a business, she said “To be a sustainable business, we have to be ready for anything that can happen...We have to be open, innovative, and mingle, to find innovative solutions to sustain our businesses."

The event gathered hundreds of HR practitioners and business leaders and had other distinguished resource persons present such as Mr. James Laar, Managing Director, L’AINE HR; Mrs. Akwelley Bulley, HR Director at UMB; Mr. Kwame Annor, Group Human Capital Director at Broadspectrum Limited; and Mr. Jehoshaphat T. Abaya, Human Capital Executive at Old Mutual Life Assurance.

Adoption of new HR Policies

In his address, the Managing Director of L’AINE HR, Mr. James Laar called for the adoption of new HR Policies and business models that will enhance new ways of HR work.

“Following the disruption of the world economy brought about by Covid-19, the explosion in digitalization, and the current economic crisis, there is the need for regular wider and broad-based engagement to dialogue on the future of work. And the adoption of new HR Policies and business models that will enhance new ways of working,” he said. 

Touching on the theme for the HR Interactive event, the Chief Executive Officer of Allianz Life Insurance, Mr. Gideon Ataraire, encouraged HR practitioners to broaden their knowledge in order to improve the quality of contributions brought on board as practitioners.

For her part, HR Director at UMB, Mrs. Akwelley Bulley, stressed the role Human Resource Practitioners need to play to ensure their employees have a comfortable work environment to meet business standards.

“HR Leaders need to start getting employees to use modern technology to make sure our people function excellently and offer their services.”
Group Human Capital Director at Broadspectrum Limited, Mr. Kwame Annor on his part said “The control and command system no longer works. Empathy is what we need in this time, to make the work environment better for all of us”, he said.

Mr. Abaya of Old Mutual also contributed to the discussion by pointing out the need to prepare for change, saying “To stay relevant in business, we need to build a culture that supports change, and have an organization that is always learning.”

HR Focus

HR Focus organises four HR Interactive events every year ahead of its annual HR Focus Conference which provides a larger platform for shared learning and networking among HR Practitioners in Ghana and across West Africa.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, 14th October 2022 at the Labadi Beach Hotel, with both in-person and virtual participants.
