Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II is new President of National House of Chiefs

Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II, Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area in the Western North Region is the new President of the National House of Chiefs (NHC).

He defeated the incumbent President of the House, Togbe Afede XIV, who was seeking re-election.

Togbe Afede, who is the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State in the Volta Region polled 25 votes as against 47 votes by Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II.

Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II before the election was the Chairman of the Governance and Development Committee of the National House of Chiefs.

A person elected President, Vice President or a member of the National House of Chiefs shall hold office for four years and is on the expiration of the term of office eligible for re-election except that a person shall not hold office as President or Vice President for more than two terms in succession, according to the Chieftaincy Act of 2008, Act 759.

Togbe Afede was elected in 2016 and he was seeking re-election for a second four-year term.

His 25 votes in defeat were the same number of votes he obtained in his 2016 victory.

The election was held at the National House of Chiefs conference room in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

Known in private life as Francis Kwame Agyei, the 70-year old traditional ruler was enstooled Omanhene of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area on August 8, 1988.

He was 38-years-old at the time of his enstoolment.

He is a professional accountant.
