Supported by the Association of Professional Photographers of Ghana (APPG), and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMAA), the inaugural edition will showcase works from notable and amateur photographers in a four-day event that will showcase a collection of vintage and unpublished historic photos, specific artworks from across the country and some parts of the world.

It will also create an atmosphere for photographers to rejuvenate, inspire and foster creative collaborations with each other.

Activities lined up for the week include a portfolio review that will feature artist talks and panel discussions from leaders in the photography industry. A summit and workshop that tackles industry-specific issues. Another exciting activity is by the fireside chats - a round table discussion of industry experts on the challenges and proposed solutions of the photography profession.

The Accra Photo Week will present guests with an opportunity to immerse themselves into the celebration by wandering through a field of varied themed photo installation, designed setups and photo frames with a standalone camera to take their own pictures and share their experience of what photography means to them. The week-long event will be climaxed with The Grand Pixels Photography Awards.

Nana Kojo Antwi Kesse, the project lead, said the Accra Photo Week is an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness of the impact photography has made on our lives and the need to protect and preserve it.

“What we are are doing is to try to make these images critical part of future discussions of our social history and we are thrilled about the prospect of this event and look forward to unveiling photos that will elicit nostalgic feelings for guests”, he said

According to him, a glimpse of these historic photos will immediately revive the good old days and reveal how much the country has changed in terms of landscape and infrastructure and reminisce on our rich heritage and landscape.

For Derrick Tagoe, Marketing lead believes that archiving of images is the best way to preserve history the Accra Photo Week strives to acknowledge the tireless effort of photographers who have dedicated substantial amounts of time in their studios to preserve these photos which some are now digitised for future generations.

He said the sad reality was that Ghana at the moment has no photographic library but individual archivists who are doing their best to preserve what was bequeathed to them by their parents and grandparents and that is not enough for a national cause. He, therefore, called on stakeholders to support all such effort to guard the country’s history.

In that regard, the Accra Photo Week encourages all photographers to join the celebration by sharing their best photos with the Accra Photo Week Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages with the hashtag #AccraPhotoWeek.

Professional photographers who are interested to have their photos on display at any of the venues should submit them by emailing [email protected]
